Vanuatu as a holiday destination doesn't quite have the panache of the archetypal South Pacific Island. There are some palm fringed beaches and uninhabited islands surrounded by turquoise lagoons, but nothing like the stunning beach resorts of Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga or the Cook Islands. What it does excel at though, is adventure tourism, with incredibly friendly and untainted villages, a very traditional custom culture and two world acclaimed sights: Yasur Volcano on Tanna Island is touted as the most accessible active volcano and belches its fiery plumes into the sky on a daily, sometimes hourly basis; whilst the huge wreck the President SS Coolidge lying in shallow water off the coast of Espiritu Santo is believed by many to be the best accessible wreck dive in the world. This draws in a small number of single minded tourists, but mass tourism has yet to take hold with the major concentration of resorts on the beach-less lagoon around Port Vila, the pretty but slightly jaded capital.
